The Benefits of Green Social Prescribing
Horticultural Therapy is a recognised therapeutic approach that uses gardening activities to enhance mental and physical well-being, such as improved motor skills and increased activity levels. Gardening fosters social connections, helping combat loneliness and encouraging a sense of purpose.
Horticultural Therapy is one of the activities offered through Green Social Prescribing—the practice of recommending nature-based activities to improve mental health. This practice is gaining traction around the world, and particularly in the UK.
A two-year cross-government study in England involving over 8,300 participants demonstrated significant mental health improvements:
- Happiness: Increased from an average of 5.3 to 7.5 out of 10, surpassing the national average of 7.4.
- Life Satisfaction: Rose from 4.7 to 6.8, approaching the national average of 7.5.
- Anxiety Levels: Decreased from 4.8 to 3.4, aligning closely with the national average of 3.2.
These figures prove the power of nature in supporting mental health. But what happens when people are excluded from these benefits?
Many individuals with limited hand function face barriers when trying to participate in gardening activities. Traditional tools can be difficult to grip, turning what should be a calming, rewarding experience into a frustrating challenge.
At PETA-UK, we firmly believe in the benefits of Horticultural Therapy and Green Social Prescribing. Accessible gardening should be for everyone. Our Easi-Grip range is designed with ergonomic, easy-to-hold handles, making it possible for those with reduced grip strength to garden independently, comfortably, and enjoy the full mental and physical health benefits of the outdoors.
By integrating Horticultural Therapy into Green Social Prescribing and ensuring the availability of accessible gardening tools, we can create inclusive environments that promote health and well-being for all individuals wherever they are.
